Art Appreciation

art appreciation

The Art Appreciation program has been supported by Spring Hill PTO since the early 1980s.  This is program is run by parent volunteers, providing in-class exposure to artists from around the world and throughout history.

You don’t need to be an art historian to enjoy spending time in the classroom, seeing the children appreciate and compare various styles of art, and learning about human history and life through visual culture.  All are welcome to participate!

What does an Art Appreciation Volunteer do?

Art Appreciation is run by parent volunteers.  You will conduct a lesson which includes  an introduction, discussing and showing artwork, and the doing a hands-on project in class.

Art Appreciation parent volunteers will coordinate directly with your child’s teacher to schedule a lesson.  Lessons are conducted once a month and typically last about an hour.

You do not need to know anything about art to be a parent volunteer.  There are many reference materials available to you, provided by the PTO:

  • Sample lesson plans
  • Sample activities
  • Copies of artists’ works
  • PowerPoint presentations of artist – to help you plan and present to the class.

Resource files and art posters can be found in the PTO storage room in the cafeteria.

Volunteers must provide project supplies, although most classrooms should have the basics of pencils, markers, glue, and scissors for you.

How can I participate in Art Appreciation?

Each class’s Room Parents coordinate Art Appreciation activities for the class.  Please contact your Room Parents to volunteer.

Artist Schedule

The schedule was developed to prevent overlap so that the resources are available to you for preparation.

Click here to view 2018-2019 Artist Schedule (The Grid)

If you would like to present an artist who is not on the schedule, feel free to prepare your own material.  If you do, please tailor your presentation to the grade level and provide a copy to the Art Appreciation team so we can add the artist to the schedule in the future.

Artist PowerPoint Presentations

To assist parent volunteers, we’ve compiled PowerPoint presentations of various artists that can be used for Art Appreciation lessons.  We have organized the art lesson by grade and artist. Feel free to use the presentations below for your Art Appreciation lessons.  You can also find many art appreciation lesson and project ideas with a quick Google search.
